I wasn't always The Period RD...
My origin story begins in a Family Health Team, where I started practicing as a dietitian in 2018. I was new to the profession, using the standard nutrition education practices drilled in throughout my degree (think The Balanced Plate and recommending dietary restriction for weight loss), and working with a wide variety of patient types and concerns - everything from lactation and introducing solids to infants and managing end-of-life nutrition!
In 2020, I started noticing a pattern in my patients. Women would attend nutrition appointments feeling ashamed of their bodies, or confused about how they were supposed to eat if they wanted to get pregnant, and even expressing frustration at the low-quality period education they received from their doctors.


I didn't have the direct education on how to confidently talk about nutrition and its impact on hormones, fertility and on conditions like endometriosis or PCOS! And I was starting the see the harm that weight-focused care was causing on my patient's physical and mental health. Deciding that this wasn't good enough for me or the patients I cared about, I started researching...
In 2021, I shifted into private practice where I could dedicate my time, energy and resources into women's health nutrition. With additional training and education in eating disorder care and reproductive health, I expanded my work to all areas of reproductive medicine and gynecology and I stopped offering weight loss advice - all bodies deserve evidence-based nutrition support.
And thus, The Period RD was born - providing personalized nutrition counseling services that seek to optimize hormone health for better periods, improved digestion, great energy levels and a healthy relationship with food... minus diet culture and weight stigma!

Emily practices on the home lands of the Anishinabewaki, Attiwonderonk, & Missisauga First Nations. This acknowledgement recognizes the trauma & impacts of colonialism and colonization that continue to occur to this day in Indigenous communities. Beyond this acknowledgement, Emily continually works to provide inclusive & anti-oppressive care in addition to learning & unlearning the histories of Indigenous communities.
